Game Day Food Porn: The Hot Dog Bar

completo

Football news has been pretty heavy lately, so to lighten things up let’s move the heaviness to your stomach. My secret not so secret desire to have a food blog is taking over once again. Game Day Food Porn is the Eligible Receiver feature that discusses all things snacks, food, and beverages.

This game day you should host a hot dog party. Hear me out before you relive little league horrors. These delicious vessels can by styled to appease many palettes. Just think you could be stuffing your mouth with traditional Americano, a dog slathered in ketchup, and 30 minutes later you can taste New York with some amazing kraut then for dessert stuff you face with a dog smothered in chili and cheese. You can make this as simple or as fancy as need be, but first let's talk bread.

The Bread

Sure, you can buy the shitty white bread, but why would you? My simple go to is the fresh baked white buns at Publix, but for Chicago dogs you need poppy seeds. Also, your dog does not have to stay in its traditional shape. It can be sliced and stacked on a round onion bun. Is sourdough your favorite? Go for it! Give your guests and your stomachs some variety.

The Dog

You have traditional juicy ball park franks. Don't forget about your Kosher Nathans style beef dogs. Both are delicious. Have your guests bring their favorite tubular meat. Think spicy italian sausage, chicken sausage, brats, the more creative the better. Sure this is a post about hot dogs, but live on the edge. All tubular meat is delicious!

The Toppings

Here is probably the best part about this whole hot dog bar concept. Let me share with you a few of my favorites:

The Chilean Italiano Dog

I spent two months living in Chile and one of the highlights was the hot dogs, particularly the Italiano. This delight is a hot dog topped with chopped tomatoes, mashed avocado, and mayonnaise (think the Italian flag). This beast is delicious. Fat kid it out one day. Try it. No regrets, I promise.

The Chicago Dog

I mentioned the poppy seed buns, but you gotta top this dog with yellow mustard, white onions, sweet (bright) green relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices, pickled peppers, and celery salt. These are amazing. Truly an Ameri-cago classic (see what I did there?!).

The Reuben Dog

Why not make your favorite sandwich into a hot dog. Just add kraut, thousand island, and shredded swiss cheese. You could even find some rye bread to make a truly deserving replica.

The Varsity

One of the places that is a living legend in Atlanta and when I need heartburn for a week it is worth the visit. They are famous for their chili dogs with mustard. I like to really pile it on with white onions and shredded cheddar.

The BAT

This is pretty much like it sounds, the BLT, but replace the lettuce with avocado. Don't forget your may. No BLT is complete without mayo. This is also the Chilean Italiano, but with bacon.

These are just a few ideas, but be creative! All and all this is a pretty simple way to host. You can even have fun with guests by having them bring one of their favorite components.

Shopping list:

Multiple buns/breads: Fresh hot dog buns, onion rolls, sourdough, rye, poppy seed

Dogs: Ball park franks, kosher hot dogs, sausages, brats

Toppings: Ketchup, mustard, relish (dill and/or sweet), chopped onions, kraut, mayo, avocado, chili, cheeses, bacon

Gameday Food Porn: California Mimosas and Spicy Boiled Peanuts

20120915_151931

Sitting here watching University of Louisiana-Monroe continue their 2012 campaign to join the SEC. Enjoying the game while drinking a California Mimosa and chowing down on some spicy boiled peanuts. I think boiled peanuts are a Southern thing, but if you have never had them don't turn away just yet. I introduced them to a born and bred New Englander not too long ago and he was impressed with the Southern staple.

First up California Mimosas-- warning: this drink is completely made up as is its name.
